Safe radiation dose management
We have implemented a radiation-dose-monitoring software solution (DOSE) in more than 200 CT, PET and SPECT systems across our Network. This innovative software is designed to optimise how we monitor, evaluate and report radiation doses — reinforcing our commitment to patient safety, data accuracy and clinical excellence. I-MED is proud to be the first to adopt Qaelum’s cutting-edge technology, DOSE, in the Australasian region.
What does DOSE do?
DOSE serves as a powerful tool that collates and facilitates the analysis of structured dose reports from various modalities using radiation. It allows us to efficiently monitor radiation doses, ensuring patient safety and adherence to rigorous quality standards. The DOSE software is now available on I-MED's fleet of CT scanners throughout the network.
DOSE in action
DOSE is actively being used to monitor various aspects of our imaging processes with real-time monitoring for all connected CT, PET and SPECT scanning systems.
DOSE enables I-MED to monitor, review and where possible, optimise the radiation dose for patients.
- Real-time email alerts highlight outliers, initiating clinical review process within 48 business hours.
- Collaborative efforts with vendors ensure optimal low-dose protocols without compromising image quality.
- Dedicated focus on reducing patient radiation doses through continuous improvements and educational initiatives.
- DOSE data aids radiographers in optimising scanning techniques, contributing to enhanced clinical outcomes.
DOSE and dosage benchmarking at I-MED
I-MED uses DOSE data to review dose information from every patient visit and create internal benchmarks that guide best practice across all clinics.
- Our thresholds are routinely lower than national standards, ensuring radiation levels are kept as low as reasonably achievable while maintaining image quality.
- For procedures without national dose benchmarks (such as cardiac imaging), we develop our own evidence-based targets to lead the way in safe imaging.
Tailored approach with DOSE for lung cancer screening
As part of the National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP), we’re applying DOSE in a more targeted and intensive way:
- Program-specific dose thresholds will guide all scans, and any that exceed these limits significantly will trigger real-time clinical review.
- Regular performance reports will be shared with sites, alongside tailored advice and support to continue reducing dose without compromising image quality.
- Custom NLCSP low dose protocols for all our CT systems, which will be monitored by DOSE to ensure the correct protocol is being used and consistency is achieved across our clinics.
World-class safety, every day
- Our protocols and equipment are continually reviewed to ensure optimal performance and patient safety.
- All imaging systems are regularly serviced by the manufacturer to maintain precision and compliance.
- With a focus on real-time monitoring and ongoing optimisation, we are proud to be leading the way in radiation dose management — delivering better, safer care for every patient.
