FAQs
Is mammography safe if I have breast implants?
Yes. Mammography is safe for women with implants. Our radiographers are trained in special techniques to minimise pressure on the implant while still obtaining clear images.
Can mammography damage or rupture my implants?
The risk is very low. We use “implant-displaced” views (sometimes called Eklund views) which gently move the implant back so more breast tissue can be seen without placing excessive pressure on the implant.
Will my implants affect how well the mammogram works?
Implants can obscure a small portion of breast tissue. However, with specialised techniques and, when appropriate, additional imaging such as ultrasound or MRI, we can achieve very accurate results.
Will the test feel more uncomfortable with implants?
Some women notice slightly more pressure, but we work carefully to keep you comfortable and explain each step before we begin.
Do I need to tell the clinic about my implants before my appointment?
Yes, please let us know when booking. It helps us allocate extra time and ensure the right equipment and techniques are available. If you have your implant details (type, size, year of surgery), bring them along.
Do I need to prepare differently before the scan?
No special preparation is needed, other than avoiding deodorant or talc on the day of your mammogram (this applies to all women). Just wear a two-piece outfit for comfort.
Will the appointment take longer?
Yes, mammograms for women with implants usually take a little longer, as extra images are needed. Please allow additional time when booking.
How do you check both my breast health and my implants?
Our main focus is detecting breast cancer and other abnormalities. If there are any concerns about your implants, such as rupture or capsular contracture, further tests like ultrasound or MRI may be recommended.
Will my results be compared with previous scans?
Yes, whenever possible we compare your current images with past studies to check for any changes in both breast tissue and implant appearance.
Who will explain my results?
A specialist radiologist will review your images and send a report to your doctor. Your doctor will then discuss the results and next steps with you.
Do all your clinics perform mammography for women with implants?
Most of our clinics offer this service, but some procedures (such as breast MRI for implant integrity) are only available at certain locations. Please check with us when booking.
Will it cost more to have a mammogram if I have implants?
The cost is usually the same. Some additional procedures, like breast MRI, may involve out-of-pocket expenses. Our team will provide a cost estimate before your appointment.
